Appomattox County Public Schools provide remedial summer school for selected students at all grade levels.† Instruction is offered during a four-week period, June 6-30, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.† Transportation is provided from central pick-up locations within the county for all students.† Summer school sessions for 2016 will be provided at Appomattox Elementary School for APS and AES students and at Appomattox County High School for AMS and ACHS students.

Students are recommended for summer school based on their academic progress and specific needs.† Performance on the Standards of Learning assessments is one consideration used in determining a studentís need of this program.† At both Appomattox Primary School and Appomattox Elementary School, emphasis is placed on reading and math skills with some integration of science and social studies topics.†

Appomattox Middle School has a promotion policy that requires students to pass the four core classes, as well as one additional class.† A studentís performance in the core academic classes of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies may indicate that s/he is in need of summer instruction.† If your child does not pass each of these courses, s/he will be requested to attend this program.† This will provide your child the opportunity to review specific skills needed to progress to the next grade level.

Remediation is available to any Appomattox County High School student who passed a class but failed the end-of-course Standards of Learning assessment for World History I and II, U.S. History, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, English Reading (11th grade), and/or English Writing (11th grade).† In order to retake the SOL test, the student must attend summer school.

If you have any questions about the Appomattox County Public Schools summer school program, please contact the Director of Remedial and Special Education.
