Contracted full time professional and classified employees are mandatory members in the Virginia Retirement System by the Code of Virginia. Appomattox County School Board purchases this benefit by paying a monthly percentage of your salary to VRS. This cost ranges from $4,500 to $8,500 per year per teacher. Membership in VRS also provides the employee with life insurance (benefit paid by the board) and the option to purchase additional term life insurance on yourself, your spouse and children.
MyVRS is a secure member online service that is being provided by the Virginia Retirement System. With MyVRS you can view your account information, including service and member contributions, purchase of prior service information, employment and compensation history, and basic group life insurance coverage – all updated monthly. You can also create retirement benefit estimates and change your address. VRS covered employees should go to the VRS Website at www.varetire.org to create your online account.
Purchase of Optional Life Insurance Within 31 days of becoming covered by VRS, you may apply for optional life insurance without providing evidence of insurability. After 31 days, evidence of insurability will be required. Visit the VRS web link for more details.
