Visit this site for information pertaining to benefits through the Virginia Retirement System. Dates, deadlines, news, meetings and notes will be posted here to keep staff informed of events affecting retirement.

The VRS web site is your best source for retirement information and should be visited to receive the latest retirement news.

Contracted full time professional and classified employees are mandatory members in the Virginia Retirement System by the Code of Virginia. Appomattox County School Board purchases this benefit by paying a monthly percentage of your salary to VRS. This cost ranges from $4,500 to $8,500 per year per teacher. Membership in VRS also provides the employee with life insurance (benefit paid by the board) and the option to purchase additional term life insurance on yourself, your spouse and children.

MyVRS is a secure member online service that is being provided by the Virginia Retirement System.  With MyVRS you can view your account information, including service and member contributions, purchase of prior service information, employment and compensation history, and basic group life insurance coverage – all updated monthly.  You can also create retirement benefit estimates and change your address.  VRS covered employees should go to the VRS Website at www.varetire.org to create your online account.

Purchase of Optional Life Insurance   Within 31 days of becoming covered by VRS, you may apply for optional life insurance without providing evidence of insurability. After 31 days, evidence of insurability will be required. Visit the VRS web link for more details.

Within Five Years or More of Retirement   Attend a VRS Group Counseling Session by registering for a session coming to the area. Go to the Education and Counseling and click on Group Counseling Sessions for dates and times.  Then complete a registration form to reserve your space. These half-day sessions provide an overview of VRS benefits, retirement’s financial and legal concerns, steps for investing, guidelines on purchasing prior service, and help in applying for the health insurance credit and completing the retirement application.

Five Years or More to Retirement   Attend a VRS Retirement Education Seminar by registering for a seminar scheduled in our area. Go to the VRS Retirement Education Seminar for dates and times.  Then complete a registration form to reserve your space. These half-day sessions provide an overview of VRS benefits, retirement’s financial and legal concerns, steps for investing, guidelines on purchasing prior service, and help in applying for the health insurance credit and completing the retirement application.

Member Handbook   The Member Handbook is posted on the web at www.varetire.org in PDF format.

Member Benefit Profiles (MBP)   The MBP is posted electronically to your MyVRS account annually.  VRS encourages each member to review closely their MBP for accuracy. This document has key information about your retirement benefit. Any inaccurate information should be corrected before retirement to prevent a hold up of your retirement benefit. This annual benefit statement is an important planning tool and should be retained for your records.  Members who have questions concerning their MBP’s should submit a Request for Review of Membership Records (VRS-70) to VRS.  This form can be found on the VRS website at www.varetire.org. You can view and/or print your latest MBP by going to your MyVRS account.

Could You Be Eligible for Portability?   If you are currently employed by Appomattox Co. Schools and vested in one of the public retirement systems of the City of Danville, the City of Newport News, the City of Norfolk, the City of Richmond, the City of Roanoke, or the City of Fairfax, you could be eligible for portability.  An eligible member must apply for portability within 18 months of beginning VRS-covered employment or within 18 months of the effective date of the agreement between VRS and the local plan, whichever is later.
